From it’s inception, this painting was wildly rebellious and refused to behave- rather fitting for the subject matter and the beautiful model. Modeled after a friend of the artist, the woman has a tattoo of phoenix wings spread across her back. The collage layer includes advertisements for corsets from a 1908 Sears Catalog, pages from a 1950’s fencing instruction manual, and pages from the 1960s book All Women Are Fatal among many other wonderful treasures. The dictionary page that provides the backdrop for her face features the word ‘remarkable’. A fitting description to remind viewers that no matter how many times we are burned, we rise- more beautiful, rebellious, and remarkable than before.
